Privacy Policy for ChatLoft

ChatLoft is a Chrome extension that helps you organize and reuse your own conversations with AI chat services: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity. It gives you folders and search for your chats, a library of reusable prompts, and a local meter of how many messages you send.

The short version: ChatLoft has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics. Everything it records is stored in your own browser, on your own device. The one exception is a backup you can switch on yourself, which travels through your own Google account's Chrome Sync, never through us.

This policy uses "we" loosely: ChatLoft is a small independent extension, not a service. There is no backend to send your data to even if we wanted to.

What ChatLoft stores

Everything below is created by you using the extension. Nothing is bought, imported from a third party, or gathered in the background from other sites.

Folders: the folder names you create and when you created them.

Saved chats: for each conversation, its title, its web address (URL), which service it came from, which folder you filed it in, when it was saved, and whether it was saved by you or listed automatically. Two things put a chat here:

You save it. You click "Save chat" on the page, or "Save this chat" in the side panel.
Auto-capture lists it. ChatLoft reads the chat list that the AI service already displays in its own sidebar and records those titles and links, so your library stays current without you clicking anything. This is on by default and can be turned off under Settings → "Auto-list your recent chats". It only ever reads what the site is already showing you, it never opens conversations, and it keeps at most the 5,000 most recent per service. A chat you saved or filed yourself is never overwritten or downgraded by it.

Chat text, for search inside chats: when you save a conversation, ChatLoft also stores the visible text of that conversation on your device, so the popup can search inside your chats and not just their titles. This is on by default and can be turned off under Settings → "Index chat text for search (stored only on this device)". Details worth knowing:

It is stored in the extension's own IndexedDB database on your computer (chatloft / chatText). It is not part of the Chrome Sync backup described below, and it is never transmitted.
Only conversations you save are indexed. Chats that merely appear via auto-capture are not.
Each conversation's text is capped at 100,000 characters.
Deleting a saved chat deletes its indexed text with it. Turning the setting off stops any new text from being stored.

Prompts: the title and body of each prompt you add, and a count of how often you have used it.

Usage events: each time you send a message on a supported site, ChatLoft records two things: which service it was, and the time. The content of your message is never recorded by this feature. These timestamps power the "today", "last 7 days", and "last 5 hours" figures, the toolbar badge, and the optional per-service limit alerts. At most the 2,000 most recent are kept.

Settings: your theme choice, the three toggles above, and any per-service five-hour limits you set.

Where it is stored

On your device. Folders, saved chats, prompts, usage timestamps, and settings live in Chrome's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). Indexed chat text lives in the extension's own IndexedDB database. Both are on the computer you are using, are not readable by the websites you visit, and are not uploaded anywhere.

Optional: Chrome Sync backup (off by default). Under Settings you can turn on "Back up folders & prompts to Chrome sync". When it is on, ChatLoft writes a copy of your folders, prompts, and settings (and only those) into chrome.storage.sync. Chrome then carries that copy between the devices where you are signed into the same Google account, so you can restore it with "Restore from Chrome sync". What this means in practice:

It travels through your own Google account's Chrome Sync, subject to Google's privacy policy and to whatever encryption settings you have chosen in Chrome. It does not pass through any server of ours; we do not have one, and we cannot see it.
It never includes your saved chats, their URLs, the indexed chat text, or your usage timestamps.
If the backup would exceed Chrome's sync size limit, ChatLoft silently skips it and keeps your data local.
Turning the setting off stops new backups from being written. The last copy stays in your account's extension sync storage until it is overwritten by a later backup or discarded by Chrome when you uninstall the extension.

How this maps to the Chrome Web Store's data categories

The store requires extensions to disclose data they handle, including data that never leaves your device. For completeness, here is what ChatLoft declares and why:

Web history: the titles and URLs of your saved and auto-listed chats.
User activity: the timestamps of messages you send.
Website content: the conversation text ChatLoft indexes for search, while that setting is on.

All three are used for one thing only: making the extension work for you. We do not sell or transfer any of it to third parties, do not use or transfer it for anything unrelated to organizing your AI chats, and do not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

What ChatLoft does not do

No network requests. The extension makes none. There is no backend, no API, no account, and no sign-in.
No analytics or tracking. No telemetry, no usage analytics, no cookies, no fingerprinting, no crash reporting, no ads, no advertising SDKs.
No third parties. Your data is not shared with, sold to, or received from anyone. There are no third-party services or libraries in the extension.
No remote code. All code ships inside the package; nothing is fetched or evaluated at runtime.
No other sites. ChatLoft runs only on chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, grok.com, and perplexity.ai. It has no access to your browsing on any other page.
No credentials or account data. It never reads your logins, cookies, payment details, or the AI services' own account or quota information. (This is also why the usage meter is only an estimate of your own sending. It counts what you send in the browser, so its numbers can differ from a service's own.)

Your controls

Toggle what is recorded. Auto-capture and chat-text indexing can each be turned off in the settings drawer at any time; the Chrome Sync backup is off until you turn it on.
Delete anything. Remove any folder, saved chat, or prompt from the popup Deletions take effect immediately, with a brief undo. Deleting a chat also deletes its indexed text. "Clear usage data" wipes the message timestamps.
Clear everything. Settings → "Clear all data" removes all of ChatLoft's local data in one step (it asks you to type DELETE first).
Take it with you. Settings → Export writes a single JSON file containing your folders, chats, prompts, usage history, settings, and indexed chat text. Import merges a file back in. The file is written by your browser to your own downloads. Where it goes after that is up to you.
Uninstalling wipes it. Removing ChatLoft from Chrome deletes its local storage and its IndexedDB database from your device.

Children

ChatLoft is a general productivity tool and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly store personal information about anyone, of any age, beyond the on-device records described above.

Changes to this policy

If a future version changes what is stored, where it is stored, or what leaves your device, this policy will be updated and the effective date above revised before that version is published.
